Roof box for skis
The car is full of people heading to the mountains - and the skis, poles, boots and jackets have nowhere to go. A roof box is the answer: gear up top, people and warmth inside. The only question is what capacity and length to choose.
How many pairs of skis fit

Mind length, not just capacity. Normal alpine skis (150-170 cm) need a box at least ~175 cm long. Freeride and skis over 180 cm want a 200 cm+ box. Capacity alone isn't enough - check the length too.
What size for a family
For a family of 3-4 spending a week in the mountains, a large box (450-600 l) is ideal: it carries skis plus the bulky winter clothing and bags that only clutter the cabin. A couple or small family will be fine with a smaller box.
Box or a ski rack?
- Box: skis travel dry and safe, protected from road salt and stones. Lockable. Quieter and more aerodynamic.
- Ski rack: cheaper and lighter, but the skis are exposed - wet, dirty, noisier and less secure.
On the motorway and in winter weather the box wins on comfort and gear protection.
Tips for packing skis in a box
- Alternate skis tip-to-tail - they nest better.
- Boots and helmets belong in the boot (heavy items low); keep the box for lighter, bulky things.
- Pad the bindings with soft clothing so skis don't rub.
- Spread the weight evenly and strap everything down against sliding.
